 jesse_ramirezJesse Ramirez: Building electric trucks

Jesse Ramirez is a Manager of Assembly for ZeroTruck Corp of Santa Ana, CA, which   produces all-electric medium duty trucks.

Jesse, a native Californian, previously worked as an auto technician restoring vehicles, then in new car sales, and then as an auto finance manager—but when the opportunity arose to work for ZeroTruck, Jesse didn’t hesitate to get his hands on the assembly plans. Most recently, Jesse has been the Lead Technician assembling all mechanical systems on a custom ZeroTruck stake bed for Google’s campus, which was delivered this summer.

Jesse is passionate about building quality trucks that motivate fleet buyers to “kick gas” and switch their fleets to electric trucks. Jesse’s passion is driven by the fact that petroleum is not a sustainable energy source for the world’s needs, and that now that EVs are available on the market and cost less to fuel than gasoline vehicles, it only makes sense go electric.

The State of All-Electric Trucks in the U.S. Medium-Duty Market By Sean Lyden

Santa Ana, CA. (August 18, 2014) ZeroTruck is finalizing assembly of several fully electric medium duty trucks built under a California Energy Commission Grant with Electricore, Inc. of Valencia to commercialize clean vehicles in California. CEO Tedd Abramson announced that ZeroTruck is in the final assembly stage of this breakthrough 4th generation zero emission truck after five years of research and testing from sales of prior models. Safety and reliability are a prime focus and now include tier 1 OEM components including Eaton transmissions.

Designed for eliminating emissions and creating energy independence, the ZeroTruckTM offered in low cab forward design carries a proprietary electric drive integration system (EDIS). Based on the industry leading medium duty Isuzu truck, ZeroTruck features include US manufactured lithium polymer energy storage pack, US manufactured advanced electric motor with fully automated transmission and park pawl, base 60‐80 mile city range with full highway capability, level II & III on‐board chargers, and a dash mounted multi‐function display (MFD). ZeroTruck is assembling U.S. manufactured advanced lithium polymer cells into proprietary modules and creating additional Cleantech jobs in California.

Valuable operating metrics were gathered from the launch of customer City of Santa Monica, where the first fully operational ZeroTruck was delivered in 2010. “This highly reliable drive train is still in operation and has met and exceeded all design specifications put forth by the city water department including total support by ZeroTruck since delivery,” said Mr. Abramson.

ZeroTruck electric drive integration system (EDIS) converts class (3‐5) trucks to run on electric power with a highway speed of 70 mph, and up to 80 miles per battery charge using lithium polymer battery technology. This range is ideal for the medium‐duty market, as most usage for this type of vehicle is less than 80 miles/day using dozens of body configurations. The ZeroTruck is currently listed on the GSA buy list under alternative fueled vehicles.

“Corporations and municipalities can now choose a zero emission solution with multiple body options for long term reliability and reduced fleet maintenance, and experience a 3‐5 year ROI, it saves much more than fuel” said Tedd Abramson, CEO.

The City of Santa Monica has purchased the first ZeroTruck all-electric zero emission medium duty truck. The vehicle will be equipped with a Scelzi utility body for use in the City of Santa Monica. Fleet Superintendent Rick Sikes explains what this means for the City’s fleet: ”This truck meets the needs of our Water Division and the goals of our Sustainable City Plan to reduce emissions and reduce our use of petroleum. A zero emission medium-duty truck is something that has never been available to us until now.”

The ZeroTruck is an all-electric zero emission medium duty truck based on the Isuzu N series chassis and is the only US built electric truck offered for sale in the United States in 2009. The ZeroTruck offers a low cab forward design, a fully automated transmission, up to 100-mile range with full highway capability, advanced lithium batteries, regenerative braking, and powered by a UQM PowerPhase 100 advanced electric motor. Delivery of ZeroTrucks are through select Isuzu dealerships nationwide.

ZeroTruck’s founder Tedd Abramson advised, “The vehicle is a realistic solution for fleets to go ‘zero emission’ and reducing fossil fuel. By encouraging Federal fleets to go zero-emission with their vehicle purchases, the United States can realistically achieve green job creation goals along with commercializing advanced vehicle technology. We need this for America and for our future.”

ZeroTruck based in Southern California, is a developer and producer of commercial electric trucks for public and private fleet operators. It is the only electric manufacturer that uses a US built motor and battery pack A ZeroTruck electric drive integration system (EDIS) converts class (3-5) trucks to run on electric power with a highway speed of 70 mph, and up to 100 miles per battery charge using made in the US advance lithium battery technology. This range is ideal for the medium-duty market, as most usage for this type of vehicle is less than 100 miles/day using dozens of body configurations.
